Portuguese & Lusophone World Studies
The Portuguese and Lusophone World Studies Major is an interdisciplinary degree program which includes courses in Portuguese language and Lusophone literature, culture and history, while taking full advantage of Rutgers-Newark's proximity to the Portuguese-speaking community of the Ironbound, so that students can combine experiential learning with classroom instruction.
The ability to speak another language fluently can be an asset in today 's global marketplace. Employment opportunities exist for foreign language graduates in many different areas. Government, business, education and the non-profit sector all have entry-level positions for multi-skilled liberal arts graduates, especially those who speak another language, although some positions may require advanced study. With the exception of positions in translating, interpreting or teaching, in most cases at the entry level your language fluency is seen as a secondary skill, an asset. It is not the primary function of your job. Therefore, it is necessary for foreign language students to research career opportunities and develop career goals. You want to be more directed than "something in which I can use my language abilities." Many careers do not require a specific major, but rather a wide range of demonstrated skills and accomplishments. Regardless of your career plans, it is important to develop your marketability through internships, responsible work experience, good grades and participation in college activities. Study and travel abroad can also enhance the likelihood of attracting an employer's attention.
