How are Internships
Approved by the Dept?

The student must arrange to work on a volunteer basis at a company, organization, agency or other entity in which he/she will carry out meaningful women-centered activities.  Students should begin searching for an internship during the semester prior to the planned internship.  The student will be expected to work 10-15 hours per week throughout the semester.  The Career Development Center (CDC) maintains internships in a password-protected area of the Center’s web site called eRecruiting. Students must attend a eRecruiting Activation Meeting to access these internship listings. Students may also obtain positions on their own and through the department. The student and employer must complete an Urban Studies Internship contract and have it approved through the CDC.  After the CDC approves of the contract, Professor Strom will have the final approval of descriptions of field/internship experiences, written by the organization and/or employer.

Grading:

Professor Josephson will be the overall evaluator of the student’s internship.

The Overall Requirements Include:

§         The student should keep an accurate log of hours worked, weekly journal in which records the activities in which has been engaged.

§         At the end of the semester, the student will submit a paper (at least 5-7 pages in length) describing the work done, what he/she has learned, and how this experience has related to the academic work done in Women’s Studies Classes.

§         The student will also write a brief article for the Women’s Studies newsletter about the internship experience.

§         The student must provide the advisor (usually the Director of the Women’s Studies Program) with the name and phone number of the person who is supervising the internship, and must keep the advisor informed as to his/her progress.
