ELEMENTARY & SECONDARY EDUCATION

The Department of Education and Academic Foundations is committed to preparing students to teach in elementary and secondary schools, with an emphasis on urban education. Student teaching takes place primarily in urban schools. Thirty credits are required to complete the program. All students must major in a liberal arts subject.

Secondary students major in the discipline they plan to teach. Psychology and sociology majors are acceptable for elementary students , but the department recommends majors in history, the arts, the sciences or English. Certification is offered in art, music, biological sciences, earth science (through a geology major), English, French, German, Italian, Spanish, mathematics, and social studies (through history, political science, or other social studies majors). Except for music and art, certification in a content area permits teaching in a departmentalized assignment in the content area at any grade. A K-8 certificate also is available for elementary school teaching.
