UNDECIDED??? ACTION PLAN

Visit the Career Development Center located in Hall Hall 313 to schedule an appointment with a Career Counselor for assistance with your choice of academic major and career planning / decision making..

Begin using our on-line career guidance system, FOCUS to explore your interests, personality, skills, values, and discover how these factors connect to academic major(s) and career choice(s).

Inquire about our traditional paper-and-pencil Vocational Inventories - including the Myers-Briggs, Strong Interest Inventory, and Strong Interest and Skills - to explore your personality and interests in greater depth.

Read your Rutgers-Newark Undergraduate Catalog for "major" program descriptions and requirements. There is usable information here.

Meet with an 'Academic Advisor' within the Dean of Student Affairs office to review academic concerns such as curriculum requirements and specific course selections.

Consult with third and fourth year students and faculty members about various major and career options.

Arrange "informational interviews" through the Career Center with alumni and/or employers to learn more about a particular career field(s) you may be considering.

Continue to discover and develop your values, interests, and skills by enrolling in a broad spectrum of courses and participating in campus activities, volunteer work, part-time positions, and internships.

FIRST YEAR ACTION PLAN

Carefully explore the Center's exclusive web-site to learn of the various activities, events and services offered. It will help you develop questions and areas of discussion for your first meeting with a Career Counselor. Visit the Center (Hill Hall 313) and make an appointment for Career Counseling. It is never too early to start this process.

Schedule an introductory appointment with a career counselor to discuss your concerns or ideas about choosing a major and career path. You will get personalized, one-on-one attention!

Utilize our on-line computerized guidance tool, FOCUS to explore your values, personality, interests and skills and discover how these factors can connect to major and career choice(s).

Inquire about our traditional paper-and-pencil vocational inventories to explore your personality and interests in greater depth.

Schedule follow-up appointments with your Career Counselor to review your progress. Maintain regular contact with your counselor as you work through this important decision-making process.

Learn more about career options in various majors by attending special Alumni events and Employer Information Sessions.

Look into the Career Development Center's Internship Program and part-time jobs to experience different environments while gaining valuable experience.

To obtain part-time or seasonal employment, develop a resume and have it critiqued by a Career Counselor. Attend an eRecruiting Activation meeting to attain access to the Center's eRecruiting, MonsterTRAK for Ruters-Newark, and NACELink for Rutgers-Newark web-links. Here you will find all types of part-time and seasonal jobs, formal Internships, and entry-level professional (career) opportunities. You should also attend our annual Career Fair events held from September through April.

Participate in campus activities and clubs to develop leadership, organizational and interpersonal skills. Remember, GPA isn't everything!

SOPHOMORE YEAR ACTION PLAN

If you have not already had an introductory meeting with a Career Counselor to discuss your concerns or ideas about choosing a major and career path, its now time to do so. You'll get personalized, one-on-one attention.

Use our on-line computerized guidance tool, FOCUS to explore your values, personality, interests and skills, and discover how these factors can influence your major and career choice.

Speak with a Career Counselor about our paper-and-pencil vocational tests to learn more about yourself and career alternatives with a "good fit".

Schedule follow-up appointments with your Career Counselor, as needed to review your progress. Stay in touch with your counselor as you work through this important decision making process.

Inquire about the Career Development Center's Internship Program or part-time job listings to explore prospects to acquire valuable work experience.

To explore and apply for 'available' Internship positions, attend an eRecruiting Activation Meeting. You should also have your resume critiqued by one of our Career Counselors.

Resume critiques are done by appointment or during "Walk-In Periods"..

Participate in campus activities to further develop leadership, organizational and interpersonal skills. While important, GPA is not the only factor considered by employers for internship and employment interviews.

JUNIOR YEAR ACTION PLAN

Visit the Career Development Center web-site and review the various activities and events scheduled each semester. Reference the site on a regular basis as new information is added daily/weekly.

Participate in student activities and/or volunteer work to enhance leadership, organizational, public speaking, writing and interpersonal skills. Remember, while important, GPA is not everything!

Attend CDC workshop events such as "Resume Writing" and "Interview Skills & Strategies".

Schedule a "Mock Interview" to get prepared for your interviews.

Become familiar with the Graduate School Admissions process by attending the Graduate School Information Workshop. Also, take advantage of the graduate school exam preparation software available at the Learning Resource Center (LRC - Bradley Hall).

Attend an eRecruiting Activation Meeting. Have your Resume critiqued by a Career Counselor. If you are looking for an intern or part-time position, a Resume is compulsory!

Attend On-Campus Career Fairs in November, February and April in order to "develop your network by meeting employers face-to-face".

Submit your Resume to employers for part-time, summer, or internship positions through eRecruiting, MonsterTRAK for Rutgers-Newark and NACELink for Rutgers-Newark.

Take advantage mini-computer lab, our mini-career library, updated resource directories, employer literature files, and graduate school reference directories.

IF YOU WILL BE PURSUING EMPLOYMENT:

Register to participate in the On-Campus Recruiting Program by attending one (1) of our mandatory eRecruiting Activation Meetings. Finalize your Resume and have it approved by one of our Career Counselors.

Attend "On-Campus Career Fairs" located right here on the Rutgers-Newark Campus. Learn about Off-Campus Career Fairs, which you may also be eligible to attend.

Review on-line employment openings on eRecruiting, MonsterTRAK for Rutgers-Newark, and NACELink for Rutgers-Newark.

Make plans to attend essential workshops on topics including interviewing, job search, interview image, and career fair prep.
