| How
are internships approved by the department? |
The Career Development Center maintains internships in a password
protected area of the Center's web site called eRecruiting.
Students must attend a
eRecruiting Activation Meeting to access these internship listings. Students may also obtain positions
on their own and through the department. However, in all cases,
descriptions of field/internship experiences, written by the organization
and/or employer must be approved by the MPA Director listed above
and the faculty supervisor. It is the student's responsibility
to identify a faculty member to serve as his/her faculty supervisor.
Students and employers must complete an internship contract. The
contract must be submitted no later than Friday of the first week
of classes for the fall and spring semester. Click
here to view the contract. |
| The
following characteristics must be present for credit to be issued: |
The
purpose of the internship program is to afford students an opportunity
to translate their academic training into real world practice and
to gain an overall perspective and understanding of the public and
non-profit sectors. Internships may be paid or unpaid, but they
must involve at least 150 hours of internship experience within
three months in order to earn three academic credits. See the department
internship guidelines on the forms page of the Public Administration
department web site by clicking
here. |
| Grading |
After
the internship contract is submitted, students must develop a work
plan within the first two weeks of the internship placement. The plan
must be signed by the student, the internship supervisor, the faculty
supervisor and submitted to the Director of the MPA Program by the
end of the second week of placement. The work plan must be approved
before academic credit can be awarded. Internship ratings and supervisor
(employer) evaluations must be submitted at the mid-term point of
the semester and a second set at the end of the semester. Evaluations
from the supervisor are considered in the assignment of a grade. Also
contributing toward the grade are specific reports written by the
student (term paper, case study, journal, or similar). For more information,
please see the Internship
Guidelines. |
