| How
are internships approved by the department? |
Descriptions
of field/internship experiences and accounting coops, written by
the organization and/or employer must be approved on a case-by-case
basis by the Career Development Center and School of Business contacts
listed above (in that order) before registration for the internship.
To obtain an internship for approval, students attend a eRecruiting
Activation Meeting at the Career Development Center so that
they may access internship listings on a section of the Center's
web site called
eRecruiting,
and/or seek out positions on their own. All
undergraduate students at Rutgers Business School: Undergraduate
- Newark are eligible to register for internship credit under
the specific internship courses established by the Accounting,
Finance, Management or Marketing departments. The internship
will count as an “elective” toward fulfillment of
major requirements. Students must have completed the following
pre-requisites: Accounting, 010:203 & 010:204; Finance, 390:329;
Management, 620:300; and Marketing, 630:301.
Accounting majors must get started early due to the requirements
of the Accounting Recruiting Program (ARP):

Internships are not merely part-time jobs. They are career-oriented
experiences. The purpose of the internship experience is to afford
students an opportunity to translate their academic training into
real world practice, and to gain an overall perspective of how their
chosen major operates in business organizations. Internships are
usually (but not necessarily) executed in a large, multi-departmental
corporation, which allows students to experience the cross-functional
challenges of modern organizations. Internships may be paid or unpaid,
but they must involve at least 35 hours per week for 10 to 12 weeks
in order to earn three credits. Internships will take place over
one semester. Cooperatives may be paid or unpaid, but they must
involve at least 35 hours per week for 20 to 24 weeks in order to
earn six credits. Cooperatives take place over two semesters. For
more information, please see the
INTERNSHIP
GUIDELINES AND CONTRACT |
| Grading |
Grades
are based on the following: The student must maintain a weekly diary
of his or her activities, and at the end of the term use the diary
to write a paper (typically 7-10 pages) summarizing the experience
and its relation to courses taken at RBS. The Dean of RBS, Undergraduate
Program in Newark, will grade the paper. At the end of the semester,
the employer must complete the "Internship Evaluation Form"
and return it to RBS. |
