Is credit awarded for prior internship activity?

No, internship credits will not be given for prior activities. The date the internship starts must coincide with the semester for which credit will be awarded.

How are internships approved by the department?

History majors, history minors, and Asian studies minors in their junior and senior years, with a minimum grade point average of 3.0 are eligible to apply for the internship. Sophomores may be considered on a case by case basis. Students must have completed either 21:510;287, 288 History of Islamic Civilization or 21:510;297, 298 Far Eastern History, before registering for an internship. Credits will be counted toward fulfillment of the history major, history minor, Asian Studies minor requirements and general education. The Career Development Center maintains internships in a password protected area of the Center's web site called eRecruiting. Students must attend a eRecruiting Activation meeting to access these internship listings. Students may also obtain positions on their own and through the department. However, in all cases, descriptions of field/internship experiences, written by the organization and/or employer must be approved by the Asian Studies Program Director listed above. Students and employers must complete an internship contract. The contract must be submitted prior to the semester for which the credit is being awarded. To obtain a contract, please schedule an appointment to meet with a counselor at the Career Development Center.

The following characteristics must be present for credit to be issued:

Students must complete 120 hours for the semester to receive the three credits. The History/Asian Studies Internship allows students to work for an organization or company that provides practical experience that may lead to a career in Asia or that relates to Asian studies. Through practical experience, students will gain a better understanding of some aspects of Asian history, society, life, culture, or economy.Top of page

Grading A grade will be provided that is established from the academic research paper that is written, based upon experience and a special topic decided upon in consultation with the faculty supervisor, and the performance evaluation completed by the internship supervisor (employer) at the end of the internship.
